We Welcome the Children!

Nursery:
The nursery is open each Sunday morning from 8:30 a.m. until services end at noon, and serves infants through 3-year olds. During the 8:45 service, the nursery is in Room 102. During Sunday School and the 11:00 services, the infant nursery is in Room 103, the toddler nursery is in Room 102, and the 2- and 3-year old nursery is in Room 105.

Sunday School: Sunday School classes are available each Sunday at 9:45 a.m. for preschool and elementary school children.

Preschool 1 (for children born between 10/1/05 and 9/30/06) meets in Room 106. Preschool 2 (for children born before 10/1/05) meets in Room 109. The children and teachers in these classes use the Rock Solid curriculum from Cokesbury to learn Bible stories and engage in learning activities.

Elementary school children participate in the workshop rotation model using the Power Xpress curriculum from Cokesbury. All children in grades K-5 meet in Room 211 for gathering time each week. After gathering time, each grade-level class travels to one of seven workshops each week. Children experience Bible stories in depth as they engage in active learning activities in the art, computer, cooking, games, science, storytelling, and video workshops. Charts located outside Rooms 110 and 211 indicate which workshops the classes will attend each week.

Children’s Church: Children’s Church is available following the Children’s Message at the 11:00 worship services. Children’s Church I (for children who were 3 years old by 9/30/09) meets in Room 109. Children’s Church II (for children who were 4 years old by 9/30/03) meets in Room 108. Children’s Church III (for children in kindergarten and 1st grade) meets in Room 106.

Vacation Bible School: Our annual Vacation Bible School is always a highlight of the summer! We spend a whole week learning and playing together, as we learn more about God through Bible stories, music, crafts, games, and recreation. Vacation Bible School 2010 will be July 12-16, 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m., for children who will be 4-years old by 9/30/10 through rising 6th graders. Our theme this year is “Galactic Blast: A Cosmic Adventure Praising God.” The registration form is now available for your use by using the link below. Completed forms may be returned in person to the VBS bulletin board or the church office or by mail to Blacksburg UMC, P.O. Box 931, Blacksburg, VA 24063.

Special Events: The children enjoy a number of special events throughout the year. Annual events have included the Family Fall Festival in October, the Bethlehem Birthday Bash in December, Kids’ Movie Night in March, and the Children’s Easter Celebration in the spring. We also offer occasional events called 4th & 5th Grade Fun especially for our upper elementary children.

Grace Space: A room is available at the rear of the sanctuary for parents and young children who may need a space where they can hear but not be heard during worship services. A rocking chair and changing facilities are available in this room.
Sanctuary Sacks: Sanctuary Sacks are available at both entrances to the sanctuary and in the Whisner Building for children to use during worship services. They include a book, a clipboard, paper, crayons, and pencils.

Child and Youth Protection Policy: Blacksburg United Methodist Church has adopted a policy to ensure the safety of the children and youth in our care and of the volunteers and staff who work with them. All volunteers age 16 and older are trained and screened in order to comply with this policy.

For more information about programs for children or to find out how you can get involved, please contact Tindal Snider, Age Level Ministries Coordinator at 552-5424 ext 2 or bumc.children@verizon.net.
